Chapter 3 – The Truth
Tony, only halfway down the corridor was beginning to feel guilty about leaving Megami, but going back would be suicidal. He could hear one of the creatures screeching not so far behind him and quickened his pace. What the hell is going on? What the hell are they? Why do they want me? Were just some of the questions running through Tony’s head.
Beginning to get a stitch in his side, Tony opened the door to the stairwell only to find two more of the creatures waiting for him.
He slammed the door shut and ran as fast as his legs could carry him, to the elevator and bashed on the call button repeatedly. Then he heard numerous gunshots and then the shattering of glass from the direction of his apartment and he had the horrible image of Megami. Dead.
Tony could feel the air around him getting colder as the creatures were catching up. Could smell their burning yet fleshy smell…hear them growling and moaning…feel them breathing on the back of his neck…Ping! The doors opened in the nick of time. Tony dived in and hit the ground floor button, the doors closing just before one of the monsters could get in, leaving nothing but a puff of blue smoke.
Tony slumped into a corner on the floor, gasping for breath as tears of fear filled his eyes.
As the elevator shuddered to a halt, the doors opened slowly to reveal the lobby plunged in almost complete darkness, except from the orange glow from the streetlamps outside. The sound of static from the security guards television was all that could be heard.
Afraid to call out in case one of the creatures was lurking in the darkness, Tony slowly crept out from the elevator and into the ominous orange glow, peering around the corner in search of any signs of life.
A great feeling of relief and sanctuary overwhelmed him when he saw a figure in the observation office. It was the nightshift security guard.
“Jack! Jack is that you?” he quickened his pace and stopped in the doorway, gasping in horror.
Jack was on all fours, coughing and spluttering, blood pouring from his mouth. Tony began to back away as Jack shrieked like an animal and his dark skin turned to a bizarre blue coloured smoke and a cloak appeared as if from nowhere and enveloped his quaking body.
He was one of them.
