Blockity Block Block

Post by Rutile on Sat Nov 29, 2008 5:39 am

So what do you do when you've got writer's block? I can NOT be alone in this mind-crippling nothingness that goes on in my head every time I try to work on one of my stories.

I myself have tried all the methods- go away and leave it for a while, come back. Work on it no matter what. Write from a different angle. Don't write from a different angle. Etc. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. How about for you?

Find someone you can trust to talk about your ideas for the story. Talk about where you were trying to take it, what you have done, and discuss the direction things can take from where you are, with this person.

It definitely helps to have a "sounding board" to go through your ideas and sort out what may be creating a block. That's what I do.

To try and avoid writers block I write every single possible idea/direction the story could go down. Then when I start having block I look at them and try and remember what it was I was aiming for...however, sometimes this doesn't work! I hate writers block!

Sometimes when I don't feel something, can't do something, I walk away from it and come back maybe a day or more later, depending... but that's usually with drawing.

I, like moomin, write down every little idea I get, whether it pertains to the main story/stories I'm working on or not, so that if I feel a block on one story I can go to another and see if I can get back into the flow.

Like Akkarin suggested, I have my trusted person(s) that I can talk to about my stories, knowing the will give me honest and constructive feedback. I find as I try to explain my thoughts and plans aloud, I start to think on it that much more, I end up filling in gaps that I may not have even known were there, or even continuing with the plotline.

I also just get real attentive when I'm in a writers block, I pay close attention to everything, go researching for different things. Works by my favorite writers, lyrics to my favorite songs, the plots and themes and dialogue of my favorite shows, to see if any of it will inspire me.

Lastly, if I can't seem to find any new inspiration, I go back to what inspired me in the first place, revisit it, relive it, fall in love with it all over again. The results can be surprising.

Hope it helps Ru! Good luck! ^^
